1926 Crane Co.
This is a high resolution digital reproduction of an original 1926
ad for Crane Co. It is 1 page. The ad features Gas Water
Heaters: Premier Insulated Automatic Storage Gas Water Heater
"Insulation-The Premier economy is further increased by the fact
that when water is once heated it stays hot for many hours. The
heavily insulated storage tank allows only a slight radiation loss.
A thick jacket of asbestos completely surrounds the storage tank
and heating chamber. With its protective outer sheath of steel,
this insulation conserves heat like a ginat "Thermos" bottle.";
The Keystone Automatic Storage Gas Water Heater "The
Keystone is very much like the Premier in appearance and
construction. The tank is extra heavy, inclosed in a thick
asbestos insulating jacket, with outer sheath of steel."

Manville Pre-Shrunk Asbestocel is a cellular type of insulation, made of
alternate layers of plain and corrugated asbestos felts. Used on pipe
lines carrying low pressure steam and hot water. This material will not
absorb moisture while in stock or during handling and consequently
expand. Pre-Shrunk Asbestocel is made of specially-treated, moisture
resistant asbestos paper which prevents “breathing” and thus removes
the cause of objectionable shrinkage cracks.”, J-M 85% Magnesia

1960 Crane Company
This is a high quality quality digital reproduction of the cover, title page,
and asbestos related pages only (13 pgs) of the Crane Co. catalog
published in 1960. In addition to thousands of other products, this
catalog contains listings for the following products pertaining to
asbestos: Crane Packings for Bronze and Iron Body Valves “Crane
bronze and iron body valves in the smaller sizes (usually 2-inch and
smaller) use packing made of endless molded rings; larger sizes have
plastic cores encased in woven asbestos. The packings are suitable for
steam, water, oil, gas, liquefied petroleum gases, gasoline, and air.
Although the packings generally are suitable for temperatures up to 550
F, the pressure-temperature ratings specified for the individual valves
apply. All rings are accurately die-formed to fit into stuffing boxes with
minimum effort. Endless molded rings (illustrated at upper left) are
formed from a homogenous mass consisting principally of asbestos filler,
graphite, and binder. The fiber length is carefully determined and the
percentage of asbestos and graphite accurately apportioned to maintain
deformable qualities in each ring. Core packing (see second illustration
at left) consists of a plastic core encased in an asbestos jacket. The core
material is essentially the same as that used in the molded ring packing;
the length of asbestos fiber is carefully determined, and a corrosion
inhibitor is added. Jackets are generally comprised of a commercial
grade yarn or braid. After the braid is applied to the core, the packing is
drawn through a light binder and graphite to provide adequate external
lubrication. The rings are the split-type so that they are easily slipped on
the stem. The diagonally cut ends provide a bevel joint for good sealing
when the gland is pulled up.”, Crane Packing for Steel Valves “Steel
valves intended for high pressure-temperature service demand the
utmost in well-constructed packing. In Crane valves, the core materials
are asbestos and graphite with a minimum of binder which will not harden
in service. The cores are soft enough so that the packing, under fluid
and gland pressure, will conform to the shape of the stuffing box with no
detrimental effect. Suitable agents are included to inhibit stem
corrosion.”, Cranite Sheet Packing “Cranite is a superior gasket material
prepared from selected long fiber asbestos, cross-laminated to secure
exceptional strength and durability. It has a high and uniform
compressive strength, does not deteriorate with age, and is ideally suited
for use with water, air, gas, gasoline, ammonia, steam, oil, acids,
alkalies, etc. it is used for temperatures up to 750 F.”, Spiral Wound
Gaskets “Spiral wound gaskets consist of plies of preformed metal with
asbestos or some other material as the filler strip. Corrugations in the
continuous metal strip impart tension and resiliency when the gasket is
under compression; the edges of the strip create multiple barriers
against leakage; the soft filler strip seals minute imperfections in the
flange faces. The gaskets are self-adjusting to compensate for shock,
vibration, and temperature change. They are recommended for use
against steam, oil, gases, and liquids including most chemicals, in high
pressure, high temperature installations.”, 125-Pound Bronze Gate
Valves (Wedge Disc-Non-Rising Stem-Bolted Bonnet) “The bolted bonnet
is unusually compact. Equipped with steel studs, bronze nuts, and a
Cranite gasket, it maintains a strong, tight joint, yet can easily be
dismantled and reassembled with no damage to the valve.”, 300-Pound
Bronze Gate Valves (Rising Stem-Wedge Disc-Monel Seats) “The 1-inch
valves have a union bonnet; larger sizes have an inside screw, bolted
bonnet with steel studs, bronze nuts, and Cranite gasket.”, 200-Pound
Bronze Globe and Angle Valves “The No. 229 C is especially suitable
where discs must be renewed quickly and easily. The valve is regularly
furnished with a No. 4 Cranite Disc for steam up to 450 F (and for hot
water from 200 to 420 F).”, No. 1 Cranite Discs “No. 1 Cranite Discs are
made of a specially formulated composition consisting of a synthetic
base, with asbestos and other ingredients. Sizes 3-inch and smaller
have a plain finish on both sides and, on one side, bear the marking
“No. 1 Cranite” and the size; larger sizes are plain on both sides and
bear no marking.”, No. 4 Cranite Discs “No. 4 Cranite Discs are laminated
and consist of a synthetic base with spirally wound long fibre asbestos
and other ingredients. They are suitably cured to provide the hardness
needed for high temperature, yet they seat with minimum effort. All
sizes have serrated faces on both sides and, on one side only, bear the
marking “No. 4 Cranite” and the size.”, Cranite and Lead Gaskets (For
Tongue and Groove Joints) “The Cranite (illustrated) and lead gaskets
listed in the table at the right are used with the forged steel tongue and
groove flange unions described above.”, Cranite Sheet Packing “Cranite
Sheet Packing is made from an asbestos composition. The selected long
fiber asbestos, cross laminated to provide unusual tensile strength,
offers very uniform and high resistance to compression, is exceptionally
strong and rugged, and will not deteriorate with age.”, Gaskets for
Bronze, Aluminum, and Corrosion-Resistant Flanged Joints “These full
face gaskets are 1/16-inch thick and are regularly made of Cloth
Inserted Rubber, “CC” Rubber, and Cranite for 150-pound joints or of
“CC” Rubber and Cranite for 300-pound joints.”, Gaskets for Large
Tongue and Groove Flanged Joints “Cranite gaskets are available for
300, 400, 600, 900, and 1500-pound steel large tongue and groove
flanged joints; the gaskets are 1/16-inch thick.”, Gaskets for Cast Iron
Flanged Joints “When Cranite gaskets are installed, they should be
coated with Crane Thread Lubricant to facilitate making tight joints.”, and
Gaskets for Steel Flanged Joints “Cranite gaskets are recommended for
steam, water, air, gas, and many other similar services, including oil lines
on which asbestos gaskets are permitted.”
