1952 Mundet Cork Corporation (Item # 1333)

This is a high resolution digital reproduction of an original 1952
catalog for the Mundet Cork Corporation.  It is 12 pages. The
catalog features Mundet 85% Magnesia Pipe and Block
Insulation.  It describes the manufacturing process.  Step 1:
"Magnesium carbonate (magnesia) and asbestos fibres, from
which most of the water has been removed in filtering, moves by
a screw conveyor into large revolving mixers (not shown). In the
mixers a measured amount of water, which determines the final
density of the insulation is added and the machines rotated to
produce a thoroughly homogeneous mixture. This mixture of
magnesia and asbestos fibres is weighed out by an overhead
traveling scale into a battery of extruding machines.
Reciprocating metal rods, called agitating fingers (shown at top
of illustration), vibrate through the mold in order to dislodge any
air bubbles and to assure longitudinal alignment of the asbestos
fibres. The removal of a section of pipe covering from the mold
is shown in top illustration." The physical attributes described
include ductile strength "Through the use of long asbestos fibres
running longitudinally, greater strength is built into Mundet
"Custom-Molded" 85% Magnesia."  The catalog includes
significant technical data.

recommended as a finish for Bevelled Cork Lagging "Bevelled
Cork Lagging may also be finished with a 1/2" Asbestos Cement
Plaster Finish.  Before applying this finish, the lagged insulation
galvanized iron wire mesh poultry netting securely wire-laced in
place.  The finish shall then be applied in two coats of
approximate equal thickness.  The first coat shall be applied
over the wire mesh and scratched and shall be thoroughly dry
before the second coat is applied.  The second coat shall receive
a smooth trowel finish.  Metal corner beads should be used on all
external edges of the insulation.  The mortar for both coats
should be mixed in the proportion of 100 lbs. of Portland
Cement to 200 lbs. of Asbestos Cement."
