This is a high resolution digital reproduction of an original 1961 intra-company bulletin
published by J. W. Roberts Ltd., A Turner & Newall company.  It is 2 pages.    “FIRE
PROTECTION PLUS WITH Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos. A SUCCESS STORY AT I.C.I.  At the time
of erection in 1934, considerable areas of structural steelwork at the Oil Works of Imperial
Chemical Industries Limited, Billingham, Co. Durham (now operated by Heavy a coating of
Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos 11" thick, reinforced with expanded metal and surfaced with a finish
of BD.2 Cement. During the ensuing 25 years the coatings have, on more than one occasion,
functioned effectively by protecting and maintaining intact, the steelwork against the effects of
fire. Moreover, they have fulfilled an uncovenanted but most important function by preventing
corrosive attack on the structure. for on the most recent removal of the insulation for inspection
purposes in 1960. the steelwork was found to be still in excellent condition, as illustrated in the
I.C.I.  photographs reproduced above. The structure is open to the weather and the local
atmosphere. typical of that prevailing in a large chemical works processing a variety of
materials, presents many corrosion problems.  The photograph overleaf is of an extensively
corroded toe board in the structure, not insulated with Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos but painted at
regular intervals during the twenty-five year period. Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos has, In fact,
accomplished three distinct tasks on this application:  1. Provided fire protection with only one
tenth the weight of concrete.  2.  Prevented corrosion.  3.  Obviated the need for repeated
painting, the saving in painting costs outweighing the original cost of the Sprayed LIMPET
Asbestos application.  Fire Ratings of up to 6 hours on floors and structural steelwork have
been granted by official testing authorities In many countries, endorsing the outstanding
qualities of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos for fire protection.  The versatility of Sprayed LIMPET
Asbestos is shown by the following typical but varied applications:-Dorval Airport-Montreal
350,000 sq. ft.,  Skerryvore Lighthouse Complete Interior,.  s.s... Rotterdam" 400,000 sq. ft.,
British Railways de Luxe Diesel Electric Pullman Trains 60,000 sq. ft.,  in which one coating
provides simultaneously :Fire Protection, Thermal Insulation, Noise Level Reduction,
Condensation Control.”  The bulletin also promotes Ferobestos (asbestos reinforced plastics
for wearing and bearing applications in all branches of engineering) and LIMPET (incombustible
lining board for buildings, vehicles and ships).

         1961-Turner & Newall-Bulletin 18
This is a high resolution digital reproduction of an original 1961 intra-company bulletin published
by J. W. Roberts Ltd., A Turner & Newall company.  It is 2 pages.  “Completed at a cost of over
£10,000,000, the new Department of Transport Building at Montreal International Airport. Dorval,
is one of the finest and most up-to-date air terminals in the World.  Some 350,000 sq. ft.
(32,500m 2) of steelwork in the terminal building. Including beams, girders, columns and the
undersides of steel floor assemblies, were treated with a coating of Sprayed LlMPET Asbestos by
Atlas Asbestos Co. Ltd. Of Montreal, principal licencees of J. W. Roberts ltd. for the Sprayed
LIMPET Asbestos process throughout Canada.  Other areas to which Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos is
applied include the fingers, aeroquays and underground tunnels which link the terminal building
with other airport facilities, this work being undertaken by Asbestos Erectors of Canada Ltd.  The
primary function of the application is to ensure 4-hours protection of the steel structure in the
event of fire and eliminate distortion and subsequent collapse, but in addition to Fire Protection.
Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos also provides:-Effective thermal insulation, Reduction of noise level,
Control of condensation and protection of steelwork against corrosion.  The light weight of the
material (less than one-tenth the weight of concrete) and the ease and rapidity with which it is
applied in one unbroken coating to the contours of supporting structures and underfloors as
shown overleaf, made Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos an ideal choice for this application. Sprayed
LIMPET Asbestos is being used in buildings all over the World where the following four functions
are Simultaneously required of the insulating material:  FIRE PROTECTION, THERMAL
INSULATION, CONDENSATION CONTROL, NOISE LEVEL REDUCTION.”  The bulletin also promotes
Ferobestos (asbestos reinforced plastics for wearing and bearing applications in all branches of
engineering) and LIMPET (incombustible lining board for buildings, vehicles and ships).

         1962-Turner & Newall-Bulletin 25
This is a high resolution digital reproduction of an original 1962 intra-company bulletin
published by J. W. Roberts Ltd., A Turner & Newall company.  It is 2 pages.  This bulletin
indicates that the rotating restaurant at the top of the SPACE NEEDLE in Seattle, WA “is
insulated with 22,000 ft.² (2043 m.²) of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos for fire protection and
condensation control.”  The SPACE NEEDLE was the most dramatic building at the Seattle
World’s Fair that opened on April 21st 1962.  “Shaped like a sheaf, the elegant steel spire
soars 730 ft. (222 m.) above sea level and supports a circular glass enclosed cocktail
lounge and restaurant which revolves 360º every hour.  While the movement of the 300
seat restaurant perimeter is almost imperceptible, the diners in the “eye of the needle”
are able to enjoy with their meals a succession of spectacular panoramic views of Puget
Sound, the Olympic Mountains, the fair ground, metropolitan Seattle and its lakes
stretching out to the North West with Mt. Baker in the distance.  Above the restaurant an
observation deck serving an estimated 10,000 visitors daily has shops and snack bars,
and a glass enclosed pavilion with out-door promenade accommodating 350 persons.”
“One of the prime considerations of the Space Needle designers was safety:…Not least of
the safety precautions was the inclusion of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos for fire protection,
also for condensation control.  This material covers the entire underside of the top roof
deck in the concealed areas including beams, purlins, and thin shell concrete deck on
“steeltex” paper backed wire, for condensation control.  Light fixtures on the observation
deck are concealed in a suspended ceiling and are 12” (304.8 mm.) square by 12” (304.8
mm.) deep and are made of light gauge metal.  The City of Seattle requires a one hour
fire rating on this type of fixture so Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos was applied to the four
exterior sides and top of each, providing complete protection against fire.  The inside of
Robertson “Q” deck on the bottom section housing the revolving restaurant is also
insulated with Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos to control condensation.  Total area insulated is
22,000 ft.² (2043 m.²) and the application was carried out by Acoustical and Fireproofing
Co. Seattle, Washington D.C., sub-licensees of our associate company, Keasbey &
Mattison Ltd. Of Ambler, Pennsylvania.”  “Other buildings at the World’s Fair insulated with
Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos include the U.S. Government Department of Commerce Science
Exhibit in which the ceiling of concourse is treated for acoustical correction, and the Alaska
Exhibit which incorporates a fully domed ceiling covered with Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos
(white finish).  In the latter building the coating in addition to performing its insulation
function is also used as a screen for coloured films.”  The bulletin also promotes
Ferobestos (asbestos reinforced plastics for wearing and bearing applications in all
branches of engineering) and LIMPET Board (an asbestos lining material for buildings,
vehicles and ships).
